SUSE Linux 10.[23] - Could this be the best GNU/Linux Desktop yet? Now, this may shock you to hear a committed Debian/Ubuntu user say this: I like SUSE 10.2. There, I've said it. Here's what we wrote about 10.2 in a certain well-known Linux magazine: openSUSE 10.2 is a welcome release of this well known distribution. Recent offerings from SUSE have been disappointing, but this latest version has put the shortcomings right, and offers advanced features as well. Traditionally known for using the KDE desktop, 10.2 offers both GNOME and KDE. New to 10.2 is the zypper software management tool. Reiserfs has gone, being replaced by the more conservative ext3, and cdrecord has given way to wodim. The Bitstream Vera fonts have gone - we're not so sure about this change. If you don't accept the defaults, installation can seem a little long-winded and when we asked to register the configuration we spent a long time waiting for patches to download from the SUSE site (don't do this if you're in a hurry!). That said, selection of additional packages was easy, with sensible groupings and a search facility making the process very clear - a huge improvement on earlier SUSE offerings. The release notes tell you how to get CD's and manuals - simple, but typical of the thoroughness which has gone into producing 10.2.
The most exciting feature of openSUSE 10.2 comes when you install the Xgl/Compiz 3D graphics effects. On our Lenovo 3000-N100 laptop we had to download the proprietary nVidia graphics driver from the nVidia site first, but then installation was easy. We had a little learning to do setting the configuration options, then we were rewarded with some spectacular graphics effects, even on this relatively low end machine. Windows flexed and shimmered when they were moved, and as we rotated the desktop cube, so an unused face displayed the SUSE chameleon which re-oriented itself as the cube spun.
More than a gimmick, the cube is a real advance, making different desktop work spaces much more accessible. No wonder some people think that this release of openSUSE offers the best GNU/Linix desktop experience yet. With typical attention to detail, SUSE have produced a worthy distribution with 10.2 and although there are one or two idiosyncratic features it's well worth a try, especially if your machine supports 3D graphics. Software in openSUSE 10.2 includes:
SUSE Linux 11 Boxed Set£43.99For users new to Linux, the boxed set may be the best bet: it comes with complete end-user documentation, installable media for x86 and x86 64-bit systems, and 90 days of end-user installation support from Novell. Novell are justifiably proud of SUSE Linux 11 and tell us: openSUSE 11 provides all the tools and resources you need for effective home computing and computing on the go. It includes a complete, intuitive Linux desktop with a Web browser, instant messenger, e-mail client, photo catalog, word processor, spreadsheet, graphics tools, multimedia software, games and more. Its office suite is 100-percent compatible with Microsoft Office, and it also features the latest software for home networking, wireless support, Web hosting, virtualisation, application security and software development. Key Benefits
Please note: The SUSE Linux boxed set replaces the old SuSE Linux Professional, it comes with a full set of media (DVD and CD's), installation support from SUSE, and a printed manual. SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10, with one year Upgrade Protection£58.65We think SLED10 is set to replace the old much-loved Professional boxed set. It comes as a media kit, with DVDs and CDs for both 32 bit and 64 bit architectures. Upgrade Protection is available for either one year or three years, and comes separately from the media kit, by email. This product line consists of the media kit and one year's Upgrade Protection. The SLED10 Desktop is very polished, and features staggeringly good 3-D graphics using Xgl. The desktop spaces can be positioned on a cube, which the user rotates to select the required working area. You do need a reasonably powerful machine and accelerated graphics to take full advantage of this, but once you've tried it you won't want to go back. This is what SUSE say about SLED10:
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 9 and 10SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server is designed for mission critical server and network services including file, print, web and security services as well as application and middleware solutions such as databases, ERP and storage. There is also support for high availability and failover for HPC applications. It's ideal for running on clusters. The most up-to-date version of SUSE Linux Enterprise Server is SLES10, and SLES9 is still available and supported for applications which are not certified on version 10. Novell's Upgrade Protection not only provides upgrades within a version, but allows you to upgrade from SLES9 to SLES10 at no extra cost as your applications are themselves upgraded. The combination of SLES10 on your server and SLED10 on your desktops provides a degree of synergy between server power and stability and exhilerating desktop graphics which few systems can match. Please call for pricing or further details on this product as there are a number of options on pricing depending upon levels of support required and which architecture you want to run on. |
